Film & Talk as part of Kyiv Biennial 2023

Hito Steyerl in conversation with Oleksiy Radynski

Chornobyl 22
Director, screenplay: Oleksiy Radynski; director of photography: Max Savchenko; editor: Taras Spivak. UA, 2023, DCP, color, 20 min. Ukrainian/Russian with English subtitles

This program is a cooperation with the 5th Kyiv Biennale, which this year takes place both in Ukraine and as an international solidarity project in European art institutions.
Hito Steyerl has made her installation The Tower (2015) available for the main exhibition of the Biennale in Vienna, which can be seen from October 17 until December 17, 2023. Oleksiy Radynski, filmmaker and author from Kyiv, accompanied this production.

To mark the occasion, Steyerl will be in conversation with Radynski, whose film Chornobyl 22 will kick off the evening. Past and present catastrophe scenarios intertwine in this film in an episode of the Russian invasion. During the Russian occupation of the Chernobyl zone in early 2022, a local informant secretly films the Russian troops. The workers at the nuclear power plant talk about their experiences during its takeover by the Russian military - an act of nuclear terror.
