365 Days of Full-Scale War in Ukraine. Visual Diary

Friday, 24. February 2023, 19h MuseumsQuartier Wien / Arena21

Since 24 February 2022, the beginning of Russia's full-scale war of aggression against Ukraine, the lives of all Ukrainians have changed drastically: Many have experienced the Russian occupation of their cities, many have lost family members and friends, many have fled.

The event will use various artistic works to shed light on what war means for those affected: What do people experience when they flee? How do they experience their first time in a foreign country? And how can the coexistence of Austrians and newcomers succeed in view of such different life situations?

The evening will start with a welcoming address by Bettina Leidl, director of MuseumsQuartier Wien, and an introduction by Office Ukraine. Afterwards, two video works will be presented: "15.02.22- 24.02.22 KYIV" by young artist Alisa Sizykh and a work in the form of a video diary titled “Guide Map” by Alina Maksimenko, who escaped Irpin two weeks after the beginning of the war and meticulously documented her journey.

The screening will be followed by the theatre piece "365 Days”. The project of Burgtheaterstudio as part of the Junge Akademie 22/23 brought together 11 different people, all of them are currently living in Vienna, and some of them are from Ukraine. This collective approach to dramatic events became a common artistic reflection during the last 365 days. They share their perspective on this ongoing crisis. This theatre project examines the unspeakable and all those successful and failed attempts to understand each other. Afterwards there will be a talk with participants of the play.

An additional part of the program will be a video projection of images by Ukrainian artists that will be shown for three days on the façade of the MQ.

The evening will be held in three languages, Ukrainian, English, and German.
A joint event of MuseumsQuartier Wien and Office Ukraine.

How can one talk about the war in Vienna? When is it important to say something? And when is it better not to? In the course of the project "365 Days" Ukrainians, and people from Vienna considered how they can talk about the war and what they have experienced and developed a play about the unspeakable, about putting one's foot in it and trying to understand each other.
Talk with the participants of the play and the audience.
